Last Saturday, I was given the opportunity to be part of Habitat Humanity Philippines pre-World Habitat Day celebration by taking part in the construction of unfinished houses at Bistekville 1 in Payatas, Quezon City.
Our task for the day is to turn these raw houses into colorful ones. We got hold of our roller and paint brushes and proceed at the back of Bistekville 1.
While most of us are busy painting, other volunteers took part in the medical mission and sports clinic. Chris Tiu came to teach the kids in the community on how to properly play basketball.
World Habitat Day is a worldwide event celebrated every first Monday of October every year. It was established in 1985 by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/202 that aims to make a call for new and innovative programs, policies and systems that would make our world a decent place to live for people of all walks of life – regardless of race or religion.
After painting the houses, the Habitat Home Partners prepared us a sumptuous Boodle lunch that we all enjoyed.
On October 11, Habitat for Humanity Philippines will be having simultaneous “builds” across the nation. Habitat Philippines will be organizing 20 simultaneous builds in select towns nationwide – Metro Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Zamboanga, Mindoro, Bohol, Cebu and Leyte.
Did you know that 1.6 billion people live in inadequate shelters around the world? Approximately, 1 million of them live in informal settlements and about 1 in 5 people live in conditions that harm their health, safety, prosperity and opportunities. There are many ways we can help in giving these people a safer and decent home of their own. Through this they can alleviate poverty. Having a safe and decent home provides security, peace of mind, sense of pride, dignity and fulfillment to its occupant. So any kind of help will make a big difference.
Happy World Habitat Day! Visit www.habitat.org.ph and let’s continue to build communities and transform lives!
